Our New On-Line Cloth Store!!
Offering Silk Dupions

Storefront of 125 Main StreetSilk dupion is a textured silk with a rich and remarkably wide range of lustrous color and a tremendous versatility. We sell silk dupion by the yard or in small samples for color matching. We offer over 160 colors organized for our presentation here by color groups named for various flora. We hope you will enjoy visiting the color group pages and find the perfect color for your needs.

Visit the ordering/sampling page for more information about ordering yard goods or samples. Our order minimum is ½ yard and request that you order in whole or ½ yard increments such as ½ yard, 1, 1½, 2, 2½ etc. Once it is cut, it is yours. No returns on cut pieces of cloth. We sell samples that are approximately 1 inch by 3½ inches. They are sold individually, in groups and as a set of our complete collection.

We hope you will enjoy the silk as much as we do. The web is a difficult environment for communicating subtle color and texture variations. If a precise match is important to you, be sure to order samples first. As you will see from the color group pages, the differences between some colors appear very difficult to discern in an electronic image. Also, many of the colors are iridescent, sometimes called "shot" silk, which are actually woven combinations of colors, one as the warp threads and one as the weft, either of which color is predominant depending on the direction which you look at it. This is especially alluring in clothing which moves on an animated wearer and is shaped to the contours of the body. We have tried to include a variety of pictures in this website that display swaths of iridescent silk dupion that represent the glorious colors available but seeing is believing. As is also common in textile manufacturing, colors vary slightly with different dye-lots. Make sure to order as much as you need to finish a project.

Dupion is a cloth with a crisp hand that makes it notably easy to sew. We use it ourselves for clothing, pillows and quilting. Dupion also has a sheen which reflects light elegantly and makes it popular for formal or evening wear, yet it's "slubby" texture, derived from raw silk fibers mingled with the refined fibers in the weft threads, gives this cloth a more versatile and wear-resistant surface, as opposed to taffeta or satin, and it is suitable for everyday wear and practical for home decorating and crafts. Items crafted from dupion need to have their raw edges pinked or finished, as the weft threads tend to unravel over time, especially on curved edges or with laundering and wear. This characteristic can be used to advantage by deliberately pulling threads out to create a fringed edge as part of a finishing technique.
